The theme for this year’s International Geodiversity Day, to be held on Monday 6th October 2025, will be ‘One Earth, Many Stories’.

International Geodiversity Day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2021, following a grassroots campaign by geoscience organisations around the world. Geodiversity is all around us, and includes the parts of nature that aren't alive; like minerals, fossils, soils, and landscapes. Geodiversity Day is a worldwide celebration to bring people together in promoting the many aspects of geodiversity, and its importance to society.

This year's theme is a chance for people to connect with geodiversity. Every landscape, every stone, and every fossil has a story to tell. Our plant is a record of history that dates back more than 4 billion years; one that can teach us about the origins of our natural environment and also where we, as animals, came from. As people, communities, and governments implement the Sustainable Development Goals, geodiversity provides a record of earth history that can help us prepare and respond to threats such as climate change. 'One Earth, Many Stories' encourages all of us to discover examples of geodiversity; in our landscape, in museums, in historic buildings; and delve deeper into the multitude of stories contained within planet Earth. It is hoped that geoscience groups around the world will organise events to make the stories of their local geodiversity more widely known.

The theme for 2025 was proposed by Enrico Zanoletti from Italy. He is the owner of GEOEXPLORA, a company that promotes geological heritage especially in the tourism sector and environmental education. On hearing that his theme had been selected, Enrico said "I am so happy that my suggestion for the theme for International Geodiversity Day 2025 has been selected. 'One Earth, Many Stories' came to mind because when I think about Earth’s geological history and Earth’s geological heritage, I imagine that each 'geological object' has a lot of different stories to tell us. Some are strictly connected to natural history, but many are deeply linked to the life of humans: even if we are in the 21st century, in many senses we are in a 'Stone Age'".

Jack Matthews, Co-coordinator of International Geodiversity Day said “This year's theme, proposed by Enrico, is a superb opportunity to highlight the many stories our Earth can tell us. Some of these are clear to see in our landscapes, but others are hidden. We hope that the 'One Earth, Many Stories' theme will inspire people and groups to reconnect with their local geodiversity, celebrate it, and learn what earth history can teach us as we prepare for a more sustainable future."

Jack continued "We are so grateful to all those from around the world who submitted their suggestions for the theme for International Geodiversity Day 2025. We also thank the committee who reviewed all of the submissions".
